Through its research and development of optical discs, TDK Life on Record has conducted necessary technical development for the next-generation disc utilizing the blue laser, including DURABIS hard coating formulation which protects the media surface against scratches and other contaminants that would destroy lesser discs. This hard coating technology enables the Blu-ray disc to be produced “bare,” (i.e., without requiring a cartridge) --- which provides users with convenience of mobility and creates an opportunity to develop Blu-ray hardware which is backwards compatible with DVD and CD media.
